BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, written in single-letter code as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. The sequence corresponds to a partial fragment of a protein isolated from human gastric juice, described in early reports as body protection compound. The number 157 refers to a fragment designation in that work rather than to molecular mass. Initial descriptions appeared in the early 1990s, when the fragment was reported to protect gastrointestinal tissue in animal models. Commercial material is produced by solid-phase peptide synthesis rather than extracted from biological sources.
Laboratory research on this peptide has examined a wide and heterogeneous set of endpoints, including gastric ulcer models, tendon and ligament injury, wound closure, and intestinal inflammation. Most published findings come from rodent studies, and reported effect sizes are often large relative to controls. Because the compound has been tested across many unrelated injury models, the literature is frequently described as unusually broad for a single peptide. A substantial share of this work originates from a small number of research groups, which matters when assessing how widely results have been reproduced.
Long-term storage of the dry powder is typically described at minus twenty degrees Celsius or colder, while shorter holding periods may use ordinary refrigeration. Repeated warming and cooling cycles are discouraged because they stress the material and can promote aggregation or loss. Light exposure and residual moisture are both treated as avoidable sources of degradation, and working aliquots are often prepared to limit how many times a container is opened. Sealed vials with a desiccant are the usual container.
Quality assessment rests on two separate questions: whether the chain is the intended one, and how much of the sample is that chain. Reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection is the standard purity measurement, while mass spectrometry confirms identity through the observed molecular mass. Amino acid analysis and sequence verification provide further checks. A reported purity percentage describes the proportion of the sample represented by the main peak, not the amount of peptide by mass, since counter-ions and water make up part of any lyophilized lot.

Most published findings come from rodent experiments using induced injury or surgical models. Human reports remain scarce and are largely observational, which limits how much can be stated with confidence. Questions about absorption, distribution, metabolism, and clearance in people are still open. Dose translation between species is likewise unresolved. Researchers tend to read the animal literature as a starting point rather than a settled account.
BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide composed of fifteen amino acids. Its sequence corresponds to part of a protein found in human gastric juice, which is the origin of the "body protection compound" label. In laboratory work the material is treated as a defined research chemical rather than a finished product. Published research has centered on animal models, and the peptide is not an approved medicine in most countries.
The peptide was first described in the early 1990s by a group studying gastric secretions and tissue repair. Its fifteen-residue chain is usually written as GEPPPGKPADDAGLV in single-letter code. The free peptide has the formula C62H98N16O22 and a theoretical mass near 1419.5 daltons. These identifiers are established chemical facts that can be checked against standard peptide databases. There is no ambiguity about the primary structure.
Common synonyms in catalogs include pentadecapeptide BPC 157, BPC157, and the full sequence name. A CAS registry number in the 137525-51-0 range is frequently listed, though the assignment should be verified against the supplier certificate of analysis. The name itself is not a pharmacopoeial designation, and there is no standardized international nonproprietary name. Distinguishing genuine material from related fragments generally requires mass spectrometry, since several truncated sequences share similar chromatographic behavior.
BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide whose sequence is commonly given as Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val. It is described in the literature as a fragment of a larger protein found in human gastric juice, referred to as body protection compound. The peptide was first characterized in the early 1990s by a research group in Zagreb, Croatia. Its molecular formula is C62H98N16O22 and its monoisotopic mass is approximately 1419 daltons.
== Determination == Death was historically believed to be an event that coincided with the onset of clinical death. It is now understood that death is a series of physical events, not a single one, and determination of permanent death is dependent on other factors beyond simple cessation of breathing and heartbeat. Clinical death that occurs unexpectedly is treated as a medical emergency. CPR is initiated. In a United States hospital, a Code Blue is declared and Advanced Cardiac Life Support procedures used to attempt to restart a normal heartbeat. This effort continues until either the heart is restarted, or a physician determines that continued efforts are useless and recovery is impossible. If this determination is made, the physician pronounces legal death and resuscitation efforts stop. If clinical death is expected due to terminal illness or withdrawal of supportive care, often a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) or "no code" order is in place. This means that no resuscitation efforts are made, and a physician or nurse may pronounce legal death at the onset of clinical death. A patient with working heart and lungs who is determined to be brain dead can be pronounced legally dead without clinical death occurring. However, some courts have been reluctant to impose such a determination over the religious objections of family members, such as in the Jesse Koochin case. Similar issues were also raised by the case of Mordechai Dov Brody, but the child died before a court could resolve the matter.
== Overdose == In case of overdose or adverse reaction, the immediate intravenous administration of naloxone (Narcan) is a specific antidote. Oxygen, intravenous fluids, vasopressors and other supportive measures should be used as indicated. When administered concurrently with naloxone, nalbuphine is also useful for treating overdoses of potent opioids such as fentanyl, and its highly potent derivatives such as remifentanil and sufentanil, when naloxone alone is insufficient.
=== Distribution === The apparent oral volume of distribution (VSS/F) at steady state of (R)-bicalutamide with oral administration of a single 5 to 80 mg dose of (R)-bicalutamide in a novel solid dispersion with a polymeric matrix of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose phthalate (HP55S) (also known as (R)-bicalutamide/HP55S) ranges from 22.53 ± 3.71 L to 25.38 ± 2.69 L. Bicalutamide is highly protein-bound (96.1% for racemic bicalutamide, 99.6% for (R)-bicalutamide), mainly to albumin. It has negligible affinity for SHBG and no affinity for corticosteroid-binding globulin. The tissue distribution of bicalutamide is not well-characterized. However, it has been reported that distribution studies with bicalutamide have shown that preferential (i.e., tissue-selective) accumulation in anabolic (e.g., muscle) tissues does not occur. There are no available data on hepatic bicalutamide concentrations in humans, but a rat study found that oral bicalutamide treatment resulted in 4-fold higher concentrations of the drug in the liver relative to plasma (a common finding with orally administered drugs, due to transfer through the hepatic portal system prior to reaching circulation). In men receiving 150 mg/day bicalutamide, concentrations of (R)-bicalutamide in semen were 4.9 μg/mL (11 μmol/L), and the amount of the drug that could potentially be delivered to a female partner during sexual intercourse is regarded as low (estimated at 0.3 μg/kg) and below the amount that is required to induce changes in the offspring of laboratory animals.
=== DPP-4 inhibitor trials === McGuire served on the executive committees of four cardiovascular outcome trials (CVOTs) evaluating DPP-4 inhibitors: SAVOR-TIMI 53 (saxagliptin), TECOS (sitagliptin), CAROLINA (linagliptin), and CARMELINA (linagliptin). He was co-chair of CARMELINA. These trials were designed to establish non-inferiority for major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). SAVOR-TIMI 53 reported an increased risk of hospitalization for heart failure with saxagliptin.

=== Legal status === In August 2026, Scholar Rock Netherlands withdrew its application for a marketing authorization of Isembyld for the treatment of 5q spinal muscular atrophy. The company stated that the manufacturing site used to make the medicine had not demonstrated compliance with EU GMP requirements within the required time limit. Apitegromab was authorized for medical use in the United States in September 2026. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted the application for apitegromab fast track, orphan drug, and rare pediatric disease designations. The FDA granted the approval of Isembyld to Scholar Rock.
== Research == Sandra Pizzarello's research over the last forty years involved the analysis of organic compounds in several carbonaceous chondrites, particularly molecular, chiral, and isotopic characterization of amino acids. Because the formation of these organic-rich meteorites pre-date the origin of life, they had been under investigation as potential sites of primal organic compounds which could shed light on abiogenesis, specifically the origin of biological homochirality. Such studies, however, had been inconclusive until 1997 when Cronin and Pizzarello detected 7-9% L-enantiomeric excesses of three abiological amino acids while analyzing the Murchison meteorite. Given Earth's history of meteoric impacts and the observation that meteors contain an excess of the biologically relevant L-stereoisomer of certain amino acids, Pizzarello studied the effect of meteoritic amino acids in enantiomeric excess on the formation of other biological molecules. In one study, Pizzarello found that nonracemic solutions of abiological isovaline and proteinogenic alanine can direct the condensation of glycolaldehyde to produce nonracemic solutions of threose and erythrose via an aldol reaction concluding that amino acids can act as asymmetric catalysts in carbohydrate synthesis. These findings support the origin of life hypothesis that homochirality originated prior to life and from extraterrestrial origins. However, Pizzarello's theoretical inquiries into cosmochemical evolution remain debated based on suspect analytical evidence of meteoritic enantiomeric excesses.
a mother teaching her children their father's tongue has been a recurrent, ubiquitous and prevalent pattern throughout linguistic history, […] some of the mechanisms of language change over time are likely to be inherent to the dynamics of this pathway of transmission. Such correlations are observed worldwide.
In the TV series Superstore, one of the characters, Sandra, has highly superior autobiographical memory, which occasionally ties into the plot. It is a synthetic fifteen-amino-acid peptide whose sequence matches part of a protein found in human gastric juice. It is made by chemical synthesis, not purified from tissue. The name derives from an early fragment label, not from a molecular weight.
The sequence corresponds to a segment of a naturally occurring gastric protein, so related sequence material exists in the body. The peptide itself as sold and studied is a laboratory-synthesized product. Whether an identical free peptide circulates naturally is not established.
No major regulatory agency has approved it as a medicine for any indication. It appears in research supply channels and, in some jurisdictions, in compounded preparations. Clinical use therefore sits outside standard approved-product pathways, and regulatory status varies by country.
The dry powder is the stable form and the dissolved form is comparatively fragile. Freezing a solution slows degradation but does not stop it, and repeated freezing and thawing adds further stress. Many laboratories therefore prepare small single-use portions rather than storing one large volume.
